Where did all of this start?
This all started when a Nintendo marketing manager once said that their commercials Are “Childish”.
This was in an interview with Dianne Segovia, the manager of marketing for Nintendo of Latin America. Segovia was asked who the audience is for Nintendo’s commercials during the holiday season. Segovia said that the aim is to reach parents of those with young children, which is why the commercials may seem childish.
Her exact interview can be found below.
“It depends on the game. Right now, to promote the Wii U, we’re launching commercials directed towards parents who have young children who don’t know much about the console. They are the target audience right now, and that’s why sometimes the commercials can seem a bit childish.
Games like Super Mario Maker had two commercials. One was for kids and one was for adults. This was done so that the adults could be appealed by the nostalgia, and the kids would be attracted to the use of the Gamepad and other novel elements.
In Splatoon’s case, we used a song for the commercial. The commercial’s design made it look like the game was only for kids.
For situations like these, to attract adults, we bring the game to public spaces so the general public can get to know the game and play it.”
This whole speech is for the Nintendo Wii U and she admits that Nintendo makes games for children along with adults. Their commercial priority is children though, as parents get their kids what they want. By gearing the commercials towards the children, they can in turn make parents buy the console.
Is Nintendo Switch childish?
Nintendo Switch is a game console that is specially developed for families. Also, it is a piece of computer hardware that many describe as a tablet with controllers.
Its setup is pretty simple and something that was designed with a child in mind. It would not be very desired by young, middle and mature adults. When companies say they develop their products for children, they mean that the console and games are easy enough to be learned and played by anyone including children.
As I said, Nintendo’s specialty is that they design their games and consoles for the family so their targeted commercial customers are children.
If you go to the Nintendo Game library and search for kid’s games, then Nintendo will suggest specific kids games. Although there are a lot of kid’s games available in the Nintendo store, there are also quite a few games designed for adults. Some of the best kids games are New Super Lucky’s Tale, Pokémon: Let’s go Pikachu, Pokémon™ Sword, Captain Toad: Treasure Tracker, and many others.
Since Nintendo is appealing to a wide variety of ages, they have games for both ends of the spectrum. Here is a video with the top 15 games for adults on the Switch.
Best Nintendo Childish Console
Nintendo has so many game consoles available in the market. The latest one is the Nintendo Switch. Others are Nintendo Entertainment System, Super Nintendo Entertainment System, Nintendo 64, Nintendo GameClub, Wii, Wii U, and the last and latest one is Nintendo Switch Lite.
Probably the best consoles for kids are the Nintendo Wii and the Nintendo Switch. Below I will show you why these consoles are the best.
Wii Game console
The Wii is the most successful and best selling game console of Nintendo. It was released in 2006 and the main competitor was the PS3 and Xbox 360. It is a seventh-generation video game console.
The Wii introduced the Wii Remote controller, which can be used as a handheld pointing device and which detects movement in three dimensions. The console runs games supplied on Wii optical discs. It also supported the now discontinued Wii Connect 24 service. This service enabled the Wii to receive messages and updates over the Internet while in standby mode.
The interface of the Wii menu is designed to copy television channels and separate channels by displaying them in a grid. You could then choose what “channel” you wanted with the pointing capability of the Wii remote.
Wii consoles are backward compatible with the Nintendo GameClub. This included being able to play the Wii using a gamecube controller or games.
The Wii supports wireless connectivity with the Nintendo DS without any additional accessories. This allowed users to use the DS microphone and touchscreen as inputs for Wii games.
Nintendo Switch
The Nintendo Switch is an eighth-generation video game console released in 2012, but it was not globally released until 2017. This is a hybrid video game console because it can play as a home video game console or portable console.
Its wireless Joy-Con controllers, with standard buttons and directional analog sticks for user input, also have motion sensing, and tactile feedback. They can also attach to both sides of the console to support handheld-style play. The Nintendo Switch competes with the Microsoft Xbox One and the Sony Playstation 4.
The Switch’s user interface features tile-based access to games that are either present in the game card slot or stored within the unit’s storage devices. It includes quick access buttons for a news feed from Nintendo, eShop access, and a photo album for screenshots captured during gameplay.
Nintendo prides their consoles on being extremely secure. Because of this they will award up to $20,000 to the first user to identify any vulnerability that impacts piracy, cheating, or potential sending of inappropriate content to younger users. The amount you would receive is based on the severity of the security flaw.
The switch provides online features and user profiles that can be linked to a Nintendo Account. This allows users to access online features and the ability to download games or purchase software as required.
One of the failures of Wii U was a small game library because of a lack of support from third-party developers. The good thing about the Switch though is that Nintendo attracted third-party developers so there are plenty of games for the Switch.
When should you buy the Switch for your child?
The Nintendo Switch is shaped like a tablet and it’s easy to move. The most important thing is you can download games on your console and play whenever you want. You don’t need to carry cartridges with the Switch. These as well as the game library is why you should buy the Switch.
When should you buy the Wii for your child?
As you know the Switch can easily fall to the abuses by a kid because it is lightweight and portable. So if your kid has a habit of dropping things or he/she is under 5 or 6 years old then you should go for Wii. The other reason you might consider the Wii is because the Switch can be more expensive as it is portable and works as a home console. If you decide to buy the Wii, you can find one here for a good price.
Conclusion
Now that we know the difference between the consoles of Nintendo, and which ones are the best for the kids, we can choose which one we want to own. We also now know that Nintnedo is not childish, but rather their consoles are family consoles designed for children and adults.
