What is Donkey Kong?

Donkey Kong is a video game that was created by Shigeru Miyamoto in 1981. The story revolves around Donkey Kong who moves around platforms in barrels. Despite initial skepticism from the game’s developers, it went on to become a successful brand. It is seen as one of the top games of the golden age of arcade video games in addition to being one of the most popular arcade games of all time.

Due to its popularity and success, it has mutated into a franchise of video games. Other games in the Donkey Kong franchise are Donkey Kong Jr, Donkey Kong II, Donkey Kong 3, Donkey Kong (Game boy), Donkey Kong Country series, and others. Some sources claim that the Donkey Kong franchise has sold more than 40 million units all over the world.

Who is Candy Kong?

Candy Kong is known in the series as Donkey Kong’s girlfriend. She first appeared in the Donkey Kong Country series. Although she was not Donkey Kong’s first playable character Candy Kong is the first female character in the series. She is described as beautiful and has been ranked high among top ten disturbingly sexual game characters.

Candy is a lover of music and regular physical exercise who is always helpful to Donkey Kong and the Kong family. Below are some of the most well known games that she appeared in, and the roles that Candy played in the Donkey Song series. You can also see how her and Donkey Kong have become closer in the series as time has gone on.

  • Donkey Kong Country (1994)

In Donkey Kong Country, Candy runs the “Candy’s Save Point”. This is a place where the players can save their game progress. The save point is present in all six worlds of Donkey Island. She frequently asks the Kongs to save their game rather than not save and lose their progress. In the instruction pamphlet, Candy is branded “the banana of Donkey Kong’s eye.” The pamphlet also suggests a future tying of nuptial knots between Donkey and his girlfriend, Candy. Candy, however, feels that Donkey Kong is not ready for marital life yet.

In another version of King Country, Candy runs “Candy’s Challenge” instead of Candy’s Save Point. This change is because of the possibility to save game progress via other ways (a world map). The Kongs are made to pass through a challenge and rewarded with a banana coin on successful completion of the challenge. Donkey and Diddy are tasked with six challenges representing each of the six worlds.

In a different King Country version, Candy now operates “Candy’s Dance Studio”. The studio functions as a centre for the dance dance revolution (DDR) minigame, for all of the worlds.

  • Donkey Kong 64 (1999)

In the above game, Candy now operates “Candy’s Music Shop.” The Kongs purchase her special music instruments which, among others, have powers to help ensure victory over the Kremling Krew. She looks lovely wearing a headphone, a pink t-shirt with her name inscribed on it, pink shorts and a gold necklace.

Twice, she provides the Kongs with watermelons which help make them stronger. Towards the finale, her beauty is instrumental in distracting King K Rool thus allowing Funky Kong to shoot the King.

  • DK: King of Swing (2005)

In DK: King of Swing, Candy Kong makes only a short, cameo event scene appearance. Her costumes for this game are also a contrast to her usual outward appearance. Her supportive role includes encouraging both Donkey and Diddy as they embark on their exploits. In the game, Candy and Cranky Kong appear as non-playable characters.

  • DK: Jungle Climber (2007)

This game is a sequel to DK: King of Swing. In this game Candy Kong hosts the challenge mode as a non-playable character. The opening event scene shows her and other Kongs in Sun Sun Island, having a vacation. Just like in DK: King of Swing, she also plays a supportive role which includes hosting and describing mini-games for players.

  • Donkey Kong Barrel Blast (2007)

Donkey Kong Barrel Blast marked Candy Kong’s first appearance on the Wii console. She also acts as a non-playable character in this game. (she’s the sole non-playable Kong). Still operating her “Candy’s Challenges”, she presents Donkey with some challenges or tasks which, on completion, would enable him to utilize his hidden character traits.

  • Donkey Kong Country 2: Diddy’s Kong Quest (2004) (Game Boy Advance)

Candy’s roles in Donkey Kong Country 2 see her act as an assistant to Swanky Kong in the quiz show called Swanky’s quiz bonanza. At Swanky’s show, she’s wearing purple apparel while she can be observed wearing a white dress among Kongs towards the finale. Her hair is decorated with a flower in both instances mentioned above.

  • Donkey Kong Country 3: Dixie Kong’s Double Trouble: (2005) (Game Boy Advance)

Candy Kong continues with her brief cameos in this game which is a follow-up to Donkey Kong Country 2. This time, she can be seen in Protect, one of the minigames available at Funky’s rentals, run by Funky Kong. Some Kongs, including Dixie and Kiddy Kong, save her and some other Kongs from being held captive by the Kremlings.

Although there are many other games that Candy Kong and Donkey Kong appear in, these particular games show the progression of her and Donkey Kong’s relationship. Even though to this day they have not gotten married, we expect that with the coming Donkey Kong games that it will not be long before Candy and Donkey are together.

Conclusion

Now that you know Donkey Kong’s girlfriend really is Candy, you can see why Donkey likes her. Even though she can be described as one of the minor characters in the series, there are many games that without her in them, you would not be able to pass the level.

She has a pleasant and friendly personality who refers to other Kongs as “Sugar” and “Honey.” Despite being regarded as Donkey Kong’s girlfriend, her beauty captivates both friends and foes alike, including the Kremlings.

In the Donkey Kong Cartoon series and the Super Smash Bros game, even her boss, Bluster Kong, as well as Funky Kong, find her beauty irresistible. She also wears a completely different look in the cartoons than she does in the gaming series. She also exhibits a quick temperament and frequently becomes angry with Donkey Kong.

No matter what you think about Candy and Donkey, one thing we can all agree on is that there needs to be a new game that has Donkey Kong and Candy together as husband and wife taking on the villains.
